Information on the Chatham Waterfront Bus Station

Medway has a well-connected bus network, with a number of routes supported financially by the council. Bus services operate close to most homes in Medway and there are more easy-access super low-floor buses in service. If you have difficulty in using the main bus network, the Medway Mobility service offers a link to the main shopping centres.


From February 5 - Luton Road/A2 Chatham Hill roadworks - delays to bus services

From 5 February for a period of up to 18 months major gas main replacement is being undertaken at the junction of A2 Chatham Hill, and Luton Road. Roadworks will then progress down Luton Road to Luton High Street in stages over the coming months. The works which are required to be undertaken by Southern Gas Networks by the Health and Safety Executive due ageing gas mains.

There will be traffic controlled signals which will monitored by the roadworks contractors every day from 0700 to 2100, but delays are expected on a number of services for the duration. Please allow extra time for your journey where possible.

Delays are expected on the following services:-

Chatham Hill Services 

  • 120 Chatham – Rainham – Otterham Park
  • 132 Chatham – Rainham – Hempstead Valley
  • 176 Walderslade – Weeds Wood – Maidstone Road – Chatham – Gillingham – Grange Road – Hazlemere Drive
  • 177 Walderslade – Weeds Wood – Luton – Chatham – Gillingham – Grange Road – Hazlemere Drive

Luton Road Services 

  • 113 Chatham – Hempstead Valley – Wigmore
  • 164 Chatham – White Road Estate
  • 166 Chatham – Lords Wood
  • 169 Chatham – Princes Park – Walderslade
  • 177 Walderslade – Weeds Wood – Luton – Chatham – Gillingham – Grange Road – Hazlemere Drive
  • 179 Chatham – Churchill Avenue – Walderslade

12-16 February 185 on diversion due to Ordnance Street/Railway Street Closure

From Monday 12 February until Friday 16 February due to re- construction, resurfacing and lighting works taking place in Ordnance Street at the from the junction with Railway Street will be road closures from 7am to 7pm each day.

185 services will not serve Ordnance Street, Grosvenor Road, and Old Pattens Lane. Buses will divert via A2 New Road, and City Way. The bus stops in Ordnance Street, Grosvenor Road, and Old Pattens Lane will not be served during the works.

Please proceed to bus stops in City Way, or at Chatham Railway Station during the works. Medway Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause while these essential works take place.

Update to Medway Youth Pass Season ticket sales - January

Following discussions with Arriva, a weekly discounted season ticket of £13.30 will be available to Medway Youth Card holders via Arriva’s M Ticket app.

To get the discount, Medway Youth Passholders will need to contact our Administration hub on 01634 333455 to get the code or visit the Travel Information Centre in Chatham Waterfront Bus Station and show their pass. A promo code will be issued by the Administration Hub or Information Centre staff. This code has changed for 2018.

Then passholders will need to go on to the Arriva M Ticket app and follow these steps:

  • If not already registered on the app new users have to register their details, including name, email, mobile number and postcode
  • A debit or credit card is needed to purchase tickets
  • When purchasing a ticket on the app, please select a Medway Adult weekly ticket
  • Then the promo code is entered at this stage. This will reduce the cost of the ticket from £20.80 to £13.30 - a discount of £7.50
  • The ticket will then be sent to your phone
  • The ticket can be bought on an M Ticket app (on, say, a child’s phone) or bought via an M Ticket App on another phone (for example a parent) and then pushed to the other phone
  • When boarding the bus please show the ticket on screen and the Medway Youth Pass so the driver can check eligibility.

Children travelling outside Arriva Medway area

For Medway resident children travelling from Medway to a school outside Medway (such as Gravesend or Maidstone) a South East area ticket will be required. Select Kent & Surrey > South East zone and select Child. Select a child weekly ticket. The promotion code will reduce the cost for SouthEast Child weekly from £22.80 to £20. Compared to a South East adult weekly ticket of £30.80 this represents a saving of 36%.

New 183 service to operate between Twydall, Hazlemere Drive, Grange Road, Gillingham Green to Asda.

A new, three times a day service, Monday to Friday will start from July 24 from Twydall to Asda at Gillingham Pier. The service will run from Twydall via Goudhurst Road, Eastcourt Lane, Beechings Way, A289, Lower Rainham Road (Hastings Arms), Plantation Road, Hazlemere Estate, Grange Road, Gillingham Green, Church Street, A289 to Asda. Nu-Venture are operating the service.

Service 185- Changes from 22 January 2018

From 22 January 2018 there will be some changes to the 185 daytime service on Monday to Fridays.

This is due to Nu-Venture informing Medway Council that they cannot offer the service on a commercial basis in the current climate.

Medway Council is therefore supporting a daytime service going forward with some timing changes. Nu-Venture will be operating the service.

New Mondays to Fridays Bus 185 times towards Chatham

  • The 0900 journey on Mondays to Fridays from Davis Estate will now start from Maidstone Road by Toys ’R’ Us at 0912 and will operate via Wilson Ave/Pattens Lane to Chatham.
  • The journeys timed to leave Davis Estate Vale Drive for Chatham at 0701/0808/1021/1121/1221/1321 are unchanged.
  • The 1402 bus from Davis Estate will no longer run to Chatham.

All other journeys unchanged Monday to Friday, and Saturday journeys unchanged.

Timetable cases will be updated in the week before the 22 January, and bus timetables will be available at the usual outlets.

Connected Kent and Medway Smartcard

The Kent and Medway Connected Smartcard is a new way to pay for travel on certain buses instead of cash. It can be used on only:

  • ASD Coaches
  • Autocar
  • Chalkwell
  • County Connect
  • Farleigh Coaches
  • Go Coach
  • Nu-Venture

Please note the smartcard is not accepted on Arriva buses.

Dementia Awareness

In 2015 Medway Council with the Medway Clinical Commissioning Group , and Alzheimer's Society has launched the Medway Dementia Action Alliance (DAA)- a new initiative to get local business pledging toDementia Friends logo make their services more dementia friendly.

As part of this all Medway Council staff have been on a Dementia Awareness course, including all bus station staff, and we have lined with bus companies to promote and assist in a better understanding of dementia. Arriva have themselves been involved in Dementia Roadshows, and are giving training to drivers as part of continuing development.

PlusBus is a discount price bus pass that you can buy with your train ticket at any National Rail station ticket office, or online. It can also be bought from self service machines at selected stations.Plus Bus logo

Within Medway PlusBus gives you unlimited bus travel on Arriva and Nu-Venture around the whole area. There are no peak period restrictions, so you can hop-on and hop-off buses as much as you like all day.

Bank holidays

Chatham Waterfront Bus Station is open whenever buses are running, but some routes will have a more limited service on bank holidays (GOV.UK). Contact the bus operator in the first instance.

Interactive Bus Map

Medway Council has now relaunched it's Medway Map Service and there is now a layer showing bus stops which gives you real time information about when the next bus will be arriving at a stop.

Please visit the Medway Maps and open the "Transport" folder on the left hand side, choose the bus stop layer (the eye logo) then enter a postcode in the search field at the top. This will show the bus stops in that area.

By using Medway Map Service 2, you agree to adhere to the guidelines and are aware of the disclaimers placed on the site as set out on the Medway Maps page.

Arriva Bus App

Arriva have launched an interactive bus app for smartphones and tablets where users can now track buses on the network in real time. There are also timetables, a trip planner option, the latest news and you can use the m ticket and buy tickets electronically. For more information visit Arriva's website.

Local Authority Bus Subsidy Ring-Fenced (Revenue) Grant - 2016/17 Information

Medway Council, in line with other councils who are the transport authority in their area receive funding towards from the Department for Transport (DfT) as part of the government's support for bus services. 

For 2016/17 Medway Council received a Local Authority Subsidy Ring-Fenced (Revenue) grant award of £172,154.

As part of this award local authorities are required to report on how the grant was used, and confirm that the award was used solely for the support of bus services.
